Dear Blue River Valley Community Members:

I am reaching out to you in support of our 41 teachers at Blue River Valley Schools. For many decades our school system has been an integral part of the fabric of the Blue River Valley community. Due primarily to recent state legislative financial decisions and mandates, our school district has been put in a challenging position where it has become impossible to provide our teachers with competitive salaries. The BRV school board and administrative team have made the critical and difficult decision to run an operational referendum during the May 7 election to pay our teachers more competitive wages. Ultimately, the final decision will rest in the hands of our local community members.

Please know that the decision to run a referendum did not come easy. Our school board and district team members have been working diligently with Stifel Public Finance and Ice Miller Legal Counsel for many months in analyzing our current financial status, exploring various educational dynamics, and finally, forecasting what our situation will look like in the coming years. After much analysis, research, and discussion, our district team decided we had no other option but to go to our community for help.

We encourage you, our local community members, to visit our school district’s website (www.brv.k12.in.us) where you will find a referendum tab with many resources which includes an informative PowerPoint presentation on this matter. Additionally, there will be four more community meetings where school officials will meet with the public to present materials and answer questions (dates are listed on the website). On the website, you will also find a tax calculator where you can plug in your property’s Gross Assessed Value, and the calculator will tell you exactly what your tax increase will be for the referendum.
